After missing the whole of the 2013 campaign after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, he made his comeback to the circuit at the end of December and played in Auckland and Brisbane. And on his return to a major, he and Fleming beat Marinko Matosevic and Michal Przysieszny 4-6 6-4 6-0.

"It's an amazing feeling to be back, and especially to get our first win since coming back in 2014," Hutchins said. "I think we have played some good tennis throughout this year so far, but unfortunately we lost our first two matches. My level probably wasn't as high as I hoped it had been.

"But I think we did well to dig out a win today. It was brilliant and I'm loving the feeling right now."

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Pat Rafter on his fairy tale return as he lost with Lleyton Hewitt in the doubles to Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen 6-4 7-5.

Rafter announced he would be making a shock return to the circuit on the weekend after retiring from the game 11 years ago. And it was nine years since he played in the doubles, but unfortunately it turned out to be a losing return for the Australian, who said: "I didn't want to make an idiot of myself and I thought I got through it okay."
