Hewett into the semi-finals

Roger Federer needed only 57 minutes to book his place in the semi-finals of the Brisbane International after seeing off Marinko Matosevic 6-1 6-1.

The record 17-time grand slam champion, who is beginning the 2014 campaign with a new and larger racquet frame, only dropped two games in what turned out to be a one-sided last eight contest against the Australian.

Federer secured the opening break of the match in the second game, and raced into a 5-0 lead as Matosevic could not live with the Swiss.

He did manage to get a game on the board after the sixth, but Federer stormed to the set, and after sharing the first two games with his opponent in the second went on to win five games on the spin to emphatically seal a semi-final spot, where he will face Jeremy Chardy after he defeated Samuel Groth 7-5 6-4.

In the other semi-final, home favourite Lleyton Hewitt will take on second seed Kei Nishikori, after Hewitt beat Marius Copil 6-4 6-2 and Nishikori putting out Marin Cilic 6-4 5-7 6-2.
