Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic moved closer to a semi-final CLASH after winning their second-round matches at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.

Williams started slowly but eventually overcame Yvonne Meusburger 4-6 6-3 6-2 while Ivanovic saw off Johanna Larsen 6-1 6-1.

The American's match was briefly halted by rain with the score 1-1, and when play resumed after 15 minutes Williams dropped serve. Williams broke back but dropped serve again and lost the first set.

"I was in a hole early on because she was playing so well," Williams said. "At the beginning of the year matches are much more intense than practice so sometimes you get a little niggly here and there. That's what I'm experiencing but the adrenaline of matches really helps."
