Watson crashes out of Luxembourg as ranking tumblesESPN staff October 14, 2013 « Road renamed Sir Alex Ferguson Way | Nobody talks about Nadal & Djokovic grunting - Azarenka »
Heather Watson continues to struggle as she crashed out of Luxembourg Open after losing 6-0 5-7 6-2 to Yanina Wickmayer.
The 21-year-old has now slipped to third in the British rankings, behind Laura Robson and Johanna Konta, after yet another first-round loss. She lost to Monica Puig last week at the Japan Open - the event where she was the defending champion.
Watson has only won one match in her previous nine encounters, and is out of the world's top 100 and down at No. 133 after being as high as 39 near the start of the season.
After losing the first set in a minute shy of a quarter-of-an-hour, Watson fought back from a break down in the second to clinch it and force a decider.
However, after losing the opening eight games of the match and getting back to level terms, the challenge of Watson faded as Wickmayer dropped just two games in the third set to seal the win.
