Juan Martin del Potro strengthened his hopes of securing a place at November's ATP World Tour finals in London with a 7-6(5) 7-5 victory over Milos Raonic to win the Japan Open.
The triumph gave Del Potro his third title of the season following wins in Rotterdam and Washington, while he has now moved up to fifth in the Race to London standings. The top eight qualify for the event at the O2 Arena, which starts on November 4, where Del Potro finished as beaten finalist in 2009.
Del Potro was handed a wildcard appearance in Tokyo following the injured Andy Murray's withdrawal and survived three break points in the first set before taking it with an ace.
Raonic, who finished runner-up in the event last year, proved stubborn to break down but Del Potro finally got the break in the 11th game of the second before serving out for victory.
Raonic moved up to 10th in the Race to London standings as he aims to make his first appearance at the finals.
