British number two Heather Watson was knocked out of the Citi Open in Washington with a straight-sets defeat by French fourth seed Alize Cornet.

World No. 76 Watson, ranked 45 places lower than Cornet, lost 6-4 6-4 in just 96 minutes in the second round.

Watson, 21, was broken once in each set and Cornet booked her place in the last eight with her first match point.
