Laura Robson's excellent recent form suffered a setback on Tuesday as she fell to a straight sets defeat to Lourdes Dominguez Lino in the second round of the China Open.

Robson, who narrowly missed out on a maiden WTA title at the recent Guangzhou International, went into her Beijing contest as the higher-ranked player. However, 31-year-old Dominguez Lino benefited from her experience in a 7-5 6-3 victory.

The crucial game proved to be the 12th of the first set, when the Spaniard broke to assume control. That break allowed Dominguez Lino to serve first in the second, and she took advantage to move ahead 3-1, before breaking again to win in 95 minutes.

Shock of the day saw Sam Stosur defeated in three sets by Julia Goerges. Stosur created 13 break chances against the world No. 21, converting three, while Goerges took three of six in a 7-6(2) 4-6 7-5 win.

Caroline Wozniacki remains a significant factor in the competition, but only after she came through her own three-set examination against Hsieh Su-wei. The first two sets were shared on tiebreakers, but Wozniacki stormed to a 4-0 lead in the decider to ride out a 7-6(5) 6-7(3) 6-0 victory.

World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka enjoyed a surprisingly serene passage into the next round at the expense of Sabine Lisicki, winning 6-4 6-2. Azarenka broke five times in a match that lasted an hour and 20 minutes.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Li Na managed to stop the in-form Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-2 to reach the last 16. Li can still qualify for the season-ending WTA Championship but needs to go deep into this week's tournament.

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska was also comfortable in a 6-2 6-3 win over Zhang Shuai, while ninth seed Marion Bartoli overcame Ayumi Morita 6-4 6-3.

Angelique Kerber, the No. 5 seed, emerged a 6-2 6-0 winner against Lara Arruabarrena-Veci, while Jelena Jankovic claimed one of the day's early victories, beating Monica Niculescu 6-2 6-1.
