Elena Baltacha and Heather Watson are one match away from the main draw of the Rogers Cup in Toronto after winning their opening qualifying matches.

British No. 1 Baltacha beat Aravane Rezai 6-4 6-4 and will now face Hungary's Greta Arn for a place in the first round.

"So chuffed with the win today," Baltacha wrote on her Twitter page after the match. "Rezai is a world class player and will be back to the top very soon!"

Watson meanwhile, beat Chanelle Scheepers 6-1 6-4. After a blistering start, Watson was given more of a test in the second set, but closed out the match to set up a match with world No. 40 Polona Hercog for a place in the main draw.

"I got off to a great start playing very well and was able to close it out in two sets," Watson tweeted.

However, any hopes of three British players in the main draw were dashed when Anne Keothavong fell to home favourite Sharon Fichman. Keothavong won the first set but eventually fell 2-6 7-5 6-3.
