Fish firing at Farmers Classic

Top seed Mardy Fish maintained his recent run of form with a convincing 6-2 6-4 win over No. 8 seed Igor Kunitsyn in the quarter-finals of the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.

The top-ranked American moved a step closer to clinching his second consecutive title, after enjoying success on the ATP Tour in Atlanta last week, booking a semi-final clash with compatriot Ryan Harrison.

19-year-old Harrison became the first US teenager since Andy Roddick to make back-to-back semi-final appearances as he fought back from a set down to defeat Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 3-6 6-3 6-4.

No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro, meanwhile, fell to Ernests Gulbis in the quarter-finals on Friday. The Latvian claiming a 6-2 6-4 win to qualify for the final four, where he will take on Alex Bogomolov Jr, who overcame a horror start to ultimately humble fourth seed Tomaz Bellucci of Brazil 1-6 6-4 6-1.

Top seed and defending champion Nicolas Almagro came through a gruelling endurance test to book his semi-final spot at the Swiss Open. In the first match of the day, Almagro completed his rain-affected clash with Jarkko Nieminen, winning 7-6(3) 6-3, then went on to beat countryman Feliciano Lopez 6-4 7-5 in the quarters.

He will now face Fernando Verdasco in the last four, while in the other semi Mikhail Youzhny takes on Marcel Granollers, the surprise conqueror of second seed Stanislas Wawrinka.

At the Croatian Open, Marin Cilic is on course to be the first home winner of the tournament since 1990 after beating Andreas Seppi to book a semi-final spot. He will now face Fabio Fognini.
