Ricky Walden and Robert Milkins were the first men through to the second round of the Haikou World Open on Hainan Island after defeating Peter Ebdon and Mark Davis respectively.

From the wildcard round Alan McManus, Mark Joyce and Nigel Bond all made it through to the first round in China but Simon Bedford was knocked out by Lu Haotian.

The fifth frame proved to be decisive for Walden as his victory in it ended Ebdon's mini comeback from 2-0 down and sparked the world No. 12's ability to make big breaks.

With subsequent runs of 125 and 84 Walden saw out the match 5-2 meaning he will face either Welsh Open champion Stephen Maguire or Marcus Campbell in his next match.

Milkins surged into a 4-1 lead against Davis, breaks of 55 and 66 in the opening two frames setting him on his way. Davis pulled the game back though, his 100 break taking him to 4-3 down but in a tense eight frame Milkins held tough.

Unfortunately world No. 11 Ali Carter had to withdraw from the event prior to the start for reasons relating to his ongoing battle with Crohn's disease.
