Issac Boss has been called up to the Ireland squad after scrum-half Eoin Reddan suffered a calf injury in training, ruling him out of the Six Nations opener against Scotland on Sunday.

The Ireland camp decided Leinster's Reddan would not recover in time for the Aviva Stadium curtain-raiser, though there has not been comment on whether he will be available for the visit of reigning champions Wales the following week. Boss, who was man of the match against England Saxons at the weekend, has been turned to in his place.

With Boss one of only two scrum-halves in the squad it looks very likely he could feature on Sunday.

"We've called Isaac in for the session this morning because Eoin has a slight problem with his calf," assistant Ireland coach Les Kiss said.

"We'll give him until the end of the week and see what happens. It's very unlikely that he's going to be there.

"Bossy had a sensational game against the Saxons. So he is ready to step up if required."
