New Zealand have run rampant against Canada in the Glasgow Sevens final, winning 54-7 to virtually secure their 12th IRB Sevens World Series title.

Scott Curry and Ben Lam each bagged a brace of tries as the All Blacks Sevens defied wet conditions to score eight tries against the outmatched Canadians, contesting their first final.

New Zealand are now 19 points clear of nearest rivals South Africa on the ladder after Scotland stunned the Blitzbokke in the quarter-finals, the hosts qualifying for their first semi-final for five years.

New Zealand need only advance through pool play in the ninth and final round in London next week to secure their fourth successive series victory and their 12th in 15 editions.

They were unbeaten in pool play in Glasgow, including a win over South Africa, before accounting for Australia 19-7 in the quarter-finals on Sunday followed by a tense 19-14 defeat of Fiji.

Coach Gordon Tietjens said those wins had steeled them for the final, in which the team exceeded his expectations. "They played pretty well in the conditions, unbelievable really," he said. "We couldn't sit back because Canada had beaten some pretty good teams to get to where they were, and these conditions are a real leveller."

Canada captain Phil Mack said of his team's first final: "It is huge for the team. We started something good in Vegas. Always a special team but this group has the belief and that it is something good."

Fiji finished defeated Scotland 17-10 in the third-place play-off.

England won the Plate final, defeating Kenya 26-5 having beaten Australia 21-7 in the semi-finals.

"The thing we are most happy with is the heart shown by the boys to turn it around, and the effort was really there in those last two games," England captain Tom Mitchell, England captain, Plate winners. "It is always great to have home support, Scotland have done so well this week and it is great to know we are heading home to play at Twickenham in front of a home crowd and now we can start getting excited about it."

Australia coach Michael O'Connor said: "There are some good components of our game that we improved on from Hong Kong, but we are yet to put that into a complete performance on the field. We hope to pull that together for the final tournament of the series next week."

France won the Bowl final, beating Argentina 20-14, while Wales defeated Japan 29-12 in the Shield final.

IRB Sevens World Series standings: New Zealand 158 points, South Africa 139, Fiji 129, England 117, Australia 97, Canada 82.
