Defending Hong Kong Sevens champions Fiji got their title defence off to a convincing start as they thumped Wales, last year's finalists, 42-7 in their opening match.

"When you give that standard of opposition some loose tries they have the ability to just run away with it," admitted Wales head coach Gareth Williams. "All they want is time and space and you can't afford to give them that. They've got such talented individuals they can take advantage of that and they just flooded through on us."

James Rodwell scored his 68th try for England as they beat Argentina 19-12 in Pool C with captain Tom Mitchell adding two more.

Kenya top Pool A after scoring seven tries in a 41-0 thrashing of newcomers Sri Lanka. Collins Injera scored one of the seven tries to move joint third in the Series all-time leading try scorers behind Argentina's Santiago Gómez Cora and England's Ben Gollings.

South Africa were too strong for France, winning 31-7 to go top of Pool B, while Australia eased past Spain 28-14.

New Zealand eased to a 33-0 win over Scotland in Pool D while USA defeated Samoa for the second time, winning 26-12.
