Fiji beat South Africa 33-26 in a dramatic finale to the final of the IRB World Sevens Series in Tokyo, Waisea Nacuqu scoring a try with eight seconds left to clinch the game which seemed set for extra time.
Fiji had led early on before South Africa rattled in 19 unanswered points to level the game at half-time. An error-strewn second-half was high on drama but short on quality with Fiji breaking from deep in their own half as the clock ran down to secure the win.
''We are very excited because it keeps us in the race for the title,'' Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau said. ''Our goal for this season is to win the series and we have closed the points here. There will be more expectation, now that we have won in Tokyo, in Hong Kong.''
South Africa's fifth straight final put them back on top of the series standings, two points ahead of New Zealand, who were beaten 17-12 to Fiji in the semi-finals. Fiji are 21 points off the pace in third overall.
New Zealand lost 21-12 to England, themselves beaten 17-0 by South Africa in the semis, in the third-place play-off.
Australia beat USA 17-12 in the Plate final while Wales defeated Scotland 28-21 in the Bowl final.
