Front rower Sam Burgess has received a one-match ban for a high tackle during England's 28-20 World Cup defeat to Australia.

Referee Henry Perenara put Burgess, 24, on report for catching Sam Thaiday in the head with a swinging arm in the second-half.

Burgess can appeal the charge before 11:00 GMT on Tuesday. If he accepts it, he will miss England's clash with Ireland on Saturday.

England can still progress from Group A with wins over Ireland and Fiji.

Canterbury Bulldogs prop James Graham is in the frame to replace Burgess, as is Wigan loose forward Sean O'Loughlin, if he can shake off an Achilles injury.
