The class of 2017 which numbers 41 players is second only in size to Sir Clive Woodward's squad of 44 originally named for the tour to New Zealand in 2005.
The custom in the amateur days (before 1995) was to take a group of thirty players -- usually fourteen backs and sixteen forwards.
There are only two Scots -- their equal-lowest contribution to a Lions tour since 1930 when Willie Welsh was their only representative. For the fifth time in succession Scotland supply the fewest players for a Lions tour: there were three Scots on the 2001, 2005 and 2013 tours, and two went in the original party to South Africa 2009.
