All Black Sonny Bill Williams has been ruled out of next week's Canada Sevens in Vancouver after returning home with a swollen knee.
Williams was in Las Vegas for this weekend's edition but did not feature, with New Zealand coach Sir Gordon Tietjens confirming the knee problem had flared up.
"The swelling really had not gone down so we elected to leave him out of Canada next week as well," Tietjens said.
"He had it drained and since then it's been good all week, but just after training on Saturday it was not as good as we would like so he pulled out. It swelled up again this morning [Sunday] so we elected to leave him out of Canada and go home and get it right."
Williams has been replaced in the squad by Bay of Plenty's Teddy Stanaway. New Zealand were beaten by South Africa in the Las Vegas quarterfinals and had earlier lost to Kenya.
