Toulon go top after thrashing Brive


Toulon moved to the summit of the Top 14 after a 44-15 bonus-point win over Brive as they ran in six tries at Stade Felix Mayol.

A penalty try got the European champions started after a driving maul, before wing Josua Tuisova crossed on 15 minutes.

Full-back Delon Armitage then went over on half-time to give Toulon a 22-10 lead, Brive having scored through Benito Masilevu on 18 minutes.

But tries from lock Romain Taofifenua and fly-half Tom Taylor made it 39-10 to Toulon, before Francois Da Ros crossed for the visitors, only for Toulon wing Drew Mitchell to cap off the win.

Racing 92 relinquished first place after a shock 13-9 defeat to Castres at Stade Yves du Manoir.

Ben Urdapilleta and Dan Carter traded early penalties, before Julien Caminati crossed on the half hour with his score converted to give Castres a 10-3 lead.

Urdapilleta then extended their advantage with a penalty two minutes after the break, with Carter's two penalties earning a losing bonus point for Racing.

Bordeaux-Begles kept in touch with Toulon and Clermont after a 15-3 win over Pau at Stade de Hameau, with Pierre Bernard kicking all of their points.

Stade Francais were dealt a ninth defeat of the season as they went down 33-18 to Grenoble in Paris.

Julian Arias crossed to give last season's champions an early lead on nine minutes but Grenoble went in 16-11 ahead at the break after Chris Farrell's try.

Hooker Laurent Panis crossed for the hosts to make it 18-16 soon after the break but two tries from Arnaud Heguy and a late score from Rory Grice saw Grenoble to victory.

Agen lifted themselves above Oyonnax after beating La Rochelle 31-27 for just their third win of the campaign.

Arsene Nnomo and Johann Sadie crossed for the hosts in the first half while Romain Sezy and Kevin Gourdon went over for La Rochelle, who lead 20-14 at the break.

Following the restart, George Tilsey touched down twice with Burton Francis adding seven points, with Gourdon's second try earning a losing bonus point for La Rochelle at Stade Armandie.

Clermont came from behind to ease to a 44-16 win over Oyonnax at Stade Marcel Michelin.

Flanker Valentin Ursache crossed for Oyonnax to put them 10-3 ahead after 15 minutes but six Morgan Parra penalties saw Clermont go into the break leading 18-13.

Wesley Fofana, Noa Nakaitaci, Isaia Toeava and Alexandre Lapandry then crossed in the second half to seal a bonus-point win.

On Sunday Montpellier held off a late Toulouse fightback to win 31-29 at Stade Ernest Wallon. Toulouse had the chance to draw the game late on but they missed the conversion for Timoci Matanavou's try.

Montpellier crossed three times through Timoci Nagusa (two) and Paul Willemse while Paul Perez, Luke McAlister and Matanavou scored for Toulouse.
