Gloucester secured their second Premiership Sevens crown in as many years as they saw off the Dragons in the final of the competition at the Twickenham Stoop.

In a rain-soaked evening, Gloucester's Steph Reynolds and Henry Purdy were the standout players and it was fitting that they were the two try-scorers that saw their team defend their crown as they saw off the Dragons 12-5 in the final.

The quarter-finals of the competition saw Cardiff Blues beat Leicester, Gloucester thrash Northampton 50-5, Quins see off London Irish and the Dragons edging past Newcastle. Come the semi-finals Gloucester progressed at the expense of the Blues while the Dragons stunned the home support beating Harlequins 19-15.

In the Plate Final, Leicester beat London Irish 17-0 and due to being the highest-placed Aviva Premiership finisher behind Gloucester, Harlequins will take part in next weekend's World Club Sevens tournament at Twickenham where they will be joined by the champions.

"Hopefully we can take this momentum and confidence into the World Club 7s," said Gloucester Sevens coach Olly Morgan. "We'll be losing a few players to the first team but it's a chance for the even younger guys to make a name for themselves. It will be a tough task for the boys but we'll see what squad we've got and I'm confident in their abilities.

"It's a huge achievement for the club to get the first piece of silverware of the season. Whether it was back-to-back or not it didn't really matter, it's the fact that it's a new management, a new set-up and new players and hopefully this sets us up for a successful season.

"I always believed this side was capable of defending the trophy. I saw the way we train and the way we played in the group stages and saw the other games and it was the tournament that we could win if we played to our patterns and our strengths."
