Skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold will carry the Union flag for Team GB at Sunday's closing ceremony at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Yarnold claimed Olympic gold with a huge victory in the event on February 14, finishing almost one second ahead of her nearest rival.

Great Britain's four gold medals have equalled their best ever haul, which was achieved at the 1924 Games. Team GB chief Mike Hay decided name Yarnold as flag-bearer and indicated it was well deserved.

"In winning her Olympic gold medal, Lizzy delivered an outstanding performance, and I'm certain every member of our Team GB delegation congratulates her on this well-deserved honour," Hay told BBC Sport.

Yarnold, who could not believe she had won Olympic gold, was equally as shocked at being handed the honour.

"It's been an indescribable experience here in Sochi," Yarnold said. "I came to these Games with the goal of competing to the best of my ability, doing my country proud, and supporting my team-mates across all of Team GB.

"To have been selected for this honour is so far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. It makes what has already been an incredible experience just that much more special, and I am extremely grateful."
