Jon Gruden has long admired Marshawn Lynch's ability to run routes. Lynch's receiving ability has been on display during camp today.

Tempers flared during the Raiders' mandatory camp Tuesday as a 2-minute drill involving backup units devolved into a skirmish that seemed to be centered around Fadol Brown and Brandon Parker. There was briefly a pileup involving perhaps a dozen players. Coach Jon Gruden was not pleased. He sent both units to the sideline prematurely and used some choice words in doing so.

CB Rashaan Melvin, on learning a new defensive scheme: "This is my fifth team. So, for me, it's an advantage...(Paul) Guenther's defense is a lot. A lot of pressure and a lot of man-to-man coverage on the outside."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Jon Gruden envisions Derrick Johnson being a Rich Gannon-type of leader of the Raiders defense. "My style isn't too aggressive " Johnson said of his leadership. "I'm a guy that leads by example...everybody's different. You can't talk to everybody the same. I talk to Nick Morrow differently than I do Bruce Irvin."

It did not seem like Reggie Nelson was coming back to Oakland at the end of last season, right? His familiarity with new DC Paul Guenther's scheme played a major role in his returning to Oakland, no? "I'm enjoying the process," Nelson deadpanned. "I'm competing. Happy to be here."

How much catching up will Khalil Mack have to do when he shows up? "He's going to have a lot of catching up to do," said new Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. "But I'm concerned with the guys that have been here. They've been busting their tails." Mack has not shown up for any of the Raiders' voluntary offseason workouts as he awaits a contract extension. Oakland has a three-day mandatory minicamp next week.

James Cowser works the "shuffle-punch" drill. Cowser, who was Oakland's No. 3 pass rusher last season as an outside linebacker, is transitioning to more of an inside linebacker role.

Cook: Owners had shot to shine 'positive light'

Raiders TE Jared Cook says NFL owners could've added a "social injustice month" rather than implement a new anthem policy to "bring positive light ... instead of making it worse."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

More Jared Cook on Jon Gruden...and others: "He knows what he's talking about. You can tell the difference between a coach that does, and a coach that doesn't."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Keith Smith: "(Jon) Gruden is trying to bring back that smashmouth football, and that's what fullbacks love to do."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Jared Cook, on Jon Gruden: "Biggest difference is having a head coach who is an offensive specialist...I don't know how many cups of coffee he has in the morning, but he brings it. He brings the intensity."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Greg Olson, on what he's seen improved in Derek Carr since coaching him as a rookie in 2014: "His knowledge of the game. He's taken that to a new level."
