Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. Odell Beckham Jr. is pretty good at this one-handed drill. Coach Pat Shurmur runs it because he believes it's useful in contested situations. He noted a specific play (when a Browns defender interfered on Amba Etta-Tawo) as part of the reason he runs the drill.

OBJ impresses in joint practice with Lions

Odell Beckham Jr. exploded out of his cuts, aggressively plucked the ball out of midair and made impressive one-handed grabs Tuesday in the Giants' joint practice with the Lions.

Busy practice for Odell Beckham Jr. He caught a handful of passes and was making plays all over the field against the Lions. He looks every bit as good as he did before the broken ankle.

Coach Pat Shurmur said Saquon Barkley is the same as yesterday. Labels him "day to day" with a tweaked hamstring. Barkley did not practice. He did some light work on the side with the trainer.

Matt Patricia said a family friend growing up was the widow of former New York Giants Hall of Famer Steve Owen and that she would show him some Giants stuff she would be sent when he was a kid. Wouldn't say whether or not he was a Giants or 49ers fan growing up. Just says he's a Detroit Lions fan now.

Giants' Barkley suffers mild hamstring strain

The New York Giants temporarily wrapped Saquon Barkley's left leg after the rookie started limping at the end of a big play at practice on Monday. Coach Pat Shurmur said he didn't know what happened: "I think he's all right, but we'll find out."

New father Sterling Shepard had a daughter, Cali Clay Shepard, born on Friday. "Considerate baby" he said after she came the morning after the preseason opener and before their trip to Detroit. Shepard wasn't planning to travel with the Giants to Detroit first few days if Cali didn't come nine days early.

Saquon Barkley was checked by trainers after this big play. Looked as if he came up a bit lame at the end. He was walking around afterward but does have his left leg wrapped now.

Davis Webb again working with the first-team offense. Just started practice by throwing TD passes in red-zone drill to Odell Beckham Jr. on consecutive passes.

Defensive coordinator James Bettcher was not at practice Sunday as he attended to a family matter. His mother passed last week and he was in Indiana with his family. He will rejoin the team this week when they practice in Detroit.

The Giants placed DT Kristjan Sokoli on injured reserve with a torn ACL. He was a longshot to make the roster. They signed CB Mike Jones to take his spot. Throwing bodies at the secondary trying to make it work.

The Giants are off Saturday. Training camp is officially over for veterans. They checked out of the team hotel on Thursday and get back to practice Sunday.
