Rookie update Monday at Rams camp: Veterans had the day off, giving an opportunity to some younger players to step into big roles. Brian Allen, a fourth-round pick from Michigan State, worked with Jared Goff at center. "There were definitely some things as a rookie that you go through, just letting the game slow down a little bit," Goff said. "But he stepped in there, I thought he did a really good job and starting to settle in towards the end of practice.”

Defensive backs made the plays of the day Monday at Rams camp. A day after Aqib Talib was sidelined because of a minor ankle issue, he jumped a route and intercepted a pass by Sean Mannion during 11-on-11 play. Later in red zone drills, Dominique Hatfield intercepted a pass by Jared Goff at the goal line that twas intended for Cooper Kupp. DBs were somewhat quiet first part of camp. Now in the final days, they've been creating turnovers.

Quote of the day Monday at Rams training camp, courtesy of Todd Gurley talking about Aaron Donald: "If AD was here, like he would f-up the whole practice. It's just like you get the handoff and he's right there, so a guy like that can really just - you have to sit him back and tell him to tone it down a little bit just so you can get some good reps."

Quote of the day Sunday, courtesy of Sean McVay and having to play the Oakland Raiders in Week 2 of the preseason and in the regular season opener: "If you said, 'Would you prefer to not have your second preseason game against the team you open with?' The answer would be yes for me."

Play of the day Sunday came courtesy of cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, who played outside of his normal nickel position with Aqib Talib sidelined, and got his hands on several passes. During 7-on-7, Robey-Coleman intercepted a deep pass from Jared Goff that was intended for Brandin Cooks. Earlier in the workout, during 11-on-11, Robey-Coleman nearly intercepted a ball that tipped of Cooper Kupp's hands and later he dropped a pass thrown by Brandon Allen.

Rams cornerback Aqib Talib did not practice Sunday because of an ankle issue.. Talib and receiver Robert Woods got tangled up on a play near the goal line on Saturday and both players ended up on the ground. McVay said Sunday that the decision to hold Talib out was more "precautionary" than anything. "He'll be okay," McVay said.

The Rams moved cornerback Kevin Peterson to the injured reserve and he will be sidelined for the season after tearing his ACL against the Ravens. Peterson spent most of last season on the practice squad, but impressed the staff with two interceptions in a regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. However it likely would have been a challenge for him to make the roster this season in a loaded position group.

Play of the day from practice No. 11 came from safety Lamarcus Joyner. A series after Sean McVay ushered the starters off the field during 11-on-11, and defensive coaches yelled at players to have some urgency and communicate, Joyner intercepted a pass from Jared Goff.

Rams training camp practice No. 11 ended with Sean McVay addressing his team. McVay was unhappy with their lack of urgency at the start of practice and appeared frustrated at times throughout. At one point during 11-on-11, he ushered the starters to the sideline. "We've got to be better than that," McVay said.

Aaron Donald update: Sean McVay said the Rams have had increased dialogue with Donald and that the organization felt positive about the way discussions have been going. "I think there's a level of urgency that's being displayed from us," McVay said. "I know they know how much we value him and appreciate Aaron and hopefully we'll see some things change on that front sooner than later but it's still kind of in the same boat."

A couple of injury updates following the Rams' preseason opener, per Sean McVay: Safety Blake Countess (Shoulder), not serious; Cornerback Kevin Peterson (Knee), being evaluated; Receiver Josh Reynolds (Ankle), being evaluated.

Rams backup quarterback Sean Mannion, who is in the final season of his contract, struggled last night against the Ravens, completing 3-of-13 passes for 16 yards, with an interception, in the first half. He also was sacked twice. Sean McVay said Friday that a “Combination of a lot of tough things” contributed to Mannion's performance. “Certainly Sean missed some throws and some things that are uncharacteristic of him, but the protection – there was a couple of times he didn't really have a chance to let things develop,” McVay said. “He had a couple of drops, so I think it was kind of a perfect storm of really a lot of things didn't work out in his favor.” McVay has not revealed if starters will play on Saturday against the Raiders. Regardless, it's likely Mannion will once again play a significant amount.

Jared Goff and Todd Gurley wore sweats as they stood on the sideline Thursday night during the Rams' 33-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Sean McVay elected to sit not only his top playmakers, but his entire starting lineup (With the exception of right guard Jamon Brown, outside linebacker Samson Ebukam and specialists) in the preseason opener. After two joint practices with the Ravens earlier in the week, McVay said he wanted to avoid the risk of potential injuries. But the backups struggled -- especially on offense. Sean Mannion played the first half (3-for-13 for 16 yards, INT), and Brandon Allen (10-for-15 for 73 yards, TD) in the second. The biggest bright spot came from the running back position, where second-year pro Justin Davis and rookie John Kelly are competing for the No. 3 spot. Both looked sharp and Kelly broke for a 40-yard run late in the game. The defense appeared out of sync as it allowed 403 total yards.

Flacco, Jackson lead TD drives as Ravens beat Rams 33-7

Joe Flacco threw a touchdown pass on his only series of the game, rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson ran for a score and the Baltimore Ravens rolled to a 33-7 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

This is an important preseason for Sean Mannion. He's a free agent at season's end, and the Rams need to find out whether he is a long-term fit as Jared Goff's backup. He has begun 2-for-6, with 2 sacks and 10 passing yards.
