Hue Jackson on DeShone Kizer starting Saturday night in Tampa Bay: "I don't ever want to put something on someone too soon if they're not ready. But he's demonstrated that he's ready, so let's give him a chance to see if he can do it."

Hue Jackson confirmed that Brock Osweiler will not play Saturday night in Tampa Bay. "I want to see the young guys," Jackson said, referring to DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan.

Hue Jackson was asked why he didn't put the opening game starting quarterback decision to bed when he named DeShone Kizer the starter for the third preseason game. His response: "Well it's in the bed. … So I'm very close to putting it to bed." Jackson said the Browns clearly are trending toward starting Kizer in opener, and it would take a really bad night in Tampa for Kizer not to start against the Steelers.

Browns pick Kizer to start, eye Osweiler trade

Rookie QB DeShone Kizer will start for the Browns on Saturday, as a source tells ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that the team has renewed its effort to trade Brock Osweiler.

Pat McManamon ESPN Staff Writer

One could say the decision to start DeShone Kizer is courageous, but it's not like Hue Jackson had much choice. The other two QBs did little with their opportunity, and Kizer is the future. He earned the start.

As the Browns name rookie DeShone Kizer their starter for preseason Week 3, and possibly the regular season, it's important to remember the true parameters of any QB decision. It's not about whether he is "ready." It's whether he is the best QB on the roster. To be clear, the best QB on the roster might not be "ready" to start. Such is the Browns' situation. Kizer is better than Brock Osweiler, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan. It's all relative.

Hue Jackson on his upcoming announcement of the starting QB: "I think I feel pretty good about where I am. I have been feeling pretty good about what I feel and what I think for a little while now, but you have to let things, as I have always said, play out."

Middle linebacker Tank Carder suffered an ACL injury in Monday's game. Carder will require surgery and miss the season. That means that the starting middle linebacker will be Joe Schobert.
