Maher boots FG on final play, Cowboys beat Falcons 22-19

Brett Maher shook off a missed extra point and kicked a 42-yard field goal on the final play, giving Dallas a 22-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday after the Cowboys squandered a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Falcons fall to 4-6 with a 22-19 loss to the Cowboys. Falcons have very little chance to make the playoffs now. Only 12 teams since 1990 have made the playoffs after starting 4-6. The last was the Green Bay Packers in 2016, who won six in a row to finish the season 10-6. Falcons have quick turnaround with matchup vs. NFC South leading New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving night.

Julio Jones now has a touchdown in three consecutive games. That's his longest such streak since 2014 Weeks 11-13.

Jones' tackle breaks up INT (0:30)

Cowboys safety Jeff Heath returned to the game before the end of the half after taking that punishing hit from Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones on a play that looked like a Heath INT. Gives Jones credit for keeping the Falcons' drive alive, allowing Matt Bryant to hit a field goal.

Falcons lead Cowboys 6-3 at halftime despite Matt Ryan being sacked three times. Falcons haven't gotten into the red zone yet, while Cowboys 0-1 in the red zone. Falcons still need to get the run game going with 9 rushes for 24 yards. Give Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford for playing better on defense after struggles this season.

Falcons inactives vs. Cowboys: LB Deion Jones, K Giorgio Tavecchio, FB Ricky Ortiz, CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson, S Keith Tandy, DE Steven Means, T Matt Gono.

Would be interesting if the Falcons decided to start rookie Isaiah Oliver ahead of Desmond Trufant today vs. Cowboys. It's been a tough season for Trufant so far, with the dropped interceptions and technique flaws. Not saying it for sure is going to happen, but would be interesting if that becomes a storyline today.

Young: Cowboys will be 'overmatched' at Falcons (0:34)

If Falcons LB Deion Jones returns next week vs. hometown Saints on Thanksgiving in New Orleans, he'll bring quite a history vs. the NFC South rival into the contest. In four matchups with Drew Brees, Jones has three interceptions -- one a pick-6 and one a game-clinching theft -- 131 interception return yards, 38 tackles, and four pass breakups. Falcons being cautious with Jones this week, sitting him out vs. Cowboys after activating him off IR from early season right foot surgery. The way coach Dan Quinn made it sound, Jones is more than ready to assume his role in pass coverage, but coaches want to make sure he's totally fine to take on the run game, physical offensive linemen.

Here's another clip of Desmond Trufant talking about where he's gone wrong with his technique this season. Trufant also addressed not making a play on that Nick Chubb 92-yard run, saying, "Obviously, I could have did better. I could have did more. That's all I can say to that."

Bruschi, Woodson expect Cowboys to win in Atlanta (0:49)

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Falcons coach Dan Quinn mentioned on 92.9 The Game his concern about Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott as a threat in passing game. Elliott the Cowboys' second-leading receiver with 35 receptions for 262 yards and two TDs on 47 targets. Falcons have surrendered 42 catches for 352 yards combined to RBs Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, James Conner, and Saquon Barkley. Would help to have newly activated Deion Jones back, but no guarantee the Pro Bowl LB will play Sun. Elliott the NFL's second-leading rusher (831 yards).
