The New Zealand Rugby Union has stepped up its efforts to re-sign rugby league star Sonny Bill Williams by making a formal offer to the World Cup winner.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the NZRU has tabled a three-year contract in the hope of luring Williams, currently playing for the Sydney Roosters in Australia's National Rugby League competition, back ahead of the 2014 Super Rugby season but they are prepared to wait a further year for his return if he puts pen to paper now.
Williams, who made his name in league before switching to union in 2008, has made no secret of his desire to return to the Waikato-based Chiefs with whom he won the 2012 Super Rugby title - a feat they repeated this year - before fulfilling a promise to sign for the Roosters. He is keen to add to his 19 Test caps and feature in New Zealand's defence of the World Cup in 2015 and is aware that if he did delay his return he would only have one year to earn a place in Steve Hansen's plans. Reports also suggest he has his eyes on earning a spot in the Sevens side ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
"We have made Sonny and (Williams' manager) Khoder (Nasser) an offer," said NZRU chief executive Steve Tew. "We have been talking to them and the dialogue has been positive but we don't have any ink on paper. We would obviously love Sonny to come back and play rugby here and we have made that clear - it is up to Sonny and Khoder now."
The Roosters are also chasing Williams' signature and earlier this month the 28-year-old revealed he was '50-50' regarding his playing future. The Roosters are currently leading the chase for the NRL title with the season set to reach a climax in the coming weeks with Williams then expected to play for the New Zealand Kiwis at the Rugby League World Cup in England.
