- Netherland 2-0 Australia, Hockey World Cup final
Netherlands win record seventh World Cup title
In the first of two World Cup finals featuring the Netherlands against Australia, the women took to the field in The Hague - and it was first blood to the Europeans.
Captain Maartje Paumen and Kim Lammers were on target as the Dutch won 2-0.
They broke the deadlock on 12 minutes from a penalty stroke after forward Roos Drost had been brought down by Australian goalkeeper Rachael Lynch. Paumen calmly found the top corner.
Then, six minutes before the break, Australia's hopes were all but ended when Kim Lammers doubled the advantage, finishing off an expert series of passes.
The result means Australia have not beaten the Netherlands in a major competition since overcoming their rivals at the 1998 World Cup in Utrecht.
Australia's men's side will have the chance to gain revenge on Sunday.
