Great Britain's Rebecca Downie has won gold in the uneven bars at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Bulgaria.

The 22-year-old Nottingham-born gymnast, scored 15.500 to finish ahead of Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina on 15.266 and Daria Spiridonova on 14.966.

"It still hasn't sunk in yet, it's the most amazing thing ever," Downie told BBC Sport. "For me to take the bars, it's just been an incredible day.

"One of my biggest gymnastic idols is Aliya Mustafina - watching her in training and the way she competes, I love to watch her.

"It's pretty crazy to say I've just beaten her to a European bar title.

"She said congratulations. We're fairly good friends and she always congratulates whether she wins or loses."
