Izzo: Doesn't get better than getting to Sweet 16 (0:30)

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

Michigan State is 3 1/2 minutes away from moving on to the Sweet 16 and a meeting with LSU in the East Regional in Washington. The second-seeded Spartans showed many of the qualities of a Final Four contender against Minnesota. They shot well, dominated the rebounding and stifled the Gophers on the defensive end. But they put themselves in peril with 21 turnovers and it's difficult to see them beating a higher quality opponent like LSU if they don't take better care of the ball.

Michigan State can be a puzzling team. They generally don't take a lot of bad shots and thus shoot a high percentage. They're a solid defensive team and they rebound well. But they're prone to turnovers. They have 16 with 12 1/2 minutes remaining against Minnesota in Des Moines. They lead 47-31 would be ahead by 25 or more if they protected the ball better.

The pro-Minnesota crowd has come to life in Des Moines as the Gophers are creeping back into this.

No Jordan Murphy to start second half for Minnesota.

Minnesota has some momentum heading into halftime after finishing the first half on an 8-2 run. Michigan State went the final 4:47 of the half without scoring. But the Spartans still lead 33-19.

Minnesota usually isn't a good shooting team but the Gophers are 4-of-19 against Michigan State with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half. Poor shooting is only part of their problem. Michigan State is shooting 85 percent, outrebounding the Gophers 14-4 and leading 26-11

Minnesota's Jordan Murphy played the first four minutes against Michigan State but hasn't been in the game since leaving the lineup. Murphy missed a portion of the Gophers' first-round win over Louisville after saying his back locked up. Rather than sitting on the bench, Murphy is standing behind it as play goes on without him. Murphy is Minnesota's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer.

MSU players defend Izzo after screaming incident

Several Michigan State players came to Tom Izzo's defense on Friday after the coach's animated screaming at freshman forward Aaron Henry garnered a negative public reaction.

Minnesota and Michigan State will meet for the second time this season on Saturday in Des Moines. The Spartans won the earlier matchup 79-55 in February in East Lansing. Minnesota shot just 36.7 percent. The Gophers fared worse in only three other games. "I thought they were pretty connected on the defensive end," Minnesota's Amir Coffey said. "They were solid in that game." Coffey and Jordan Murphy are Minnesota's two leading scorers. Coffey had four points, his lowest total of the season. Murphy had five, which tied for his lowest.

Michigan State survived a serious upset bid from Bradley in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Des Moines, but the Spartans' 76-65 victory was hardly inspiring. Michigan State, the No. 2 seed in the East, didn't take a lead of eight points until less than three minutes remained. The Spartans had to rely on Cassius Winston, who was their leading scorer with 26 points, far too much. Michigan State will play 10-seed Minnesota in the second round on Saturday.

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

If you're wondering – and you probably are if you're watching Michigan State and Bradley – the No. 2 seed has lost just eight times to the No. 15 seed in the NCAA tournament. Michigan State, in fact, is the most recent upset victim as a No. 2 seed. The Spartans as the two-seed in 2016 lost to Middle Tennessee State. Michigan State leads Bradley 50-48 with less than 12 minutes remaining.

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

Offensively, Cassius Winston carried Michigan State in the first half. Winston has 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. The rest of the Spartans are 6-of-20. Michigan State, the No. 2 seed in the East Regional, trail 15th-seeded Bradley 35-34 at halftime. Bradley is 6-of-9 from three, compared to 2-of-10 for the Spartans.
