Izzo blasts 'stoppage of action,' blames NCAA

Tom Izzo has already had it with how college basketball is being officiated this season. And he doesn't blame the referees. "The poor officials are mandated," Izzo said. "... But the stoppage of action in that game made it the most boring game."

Kansas tops Michigan State in season opener (1:07)

FINAL: Kansas 92, Michigan State 87. Jayhawks struggled offensively late in the game, but they're further along in their development than Michigan State. Spartans looking for go-to-guys to emerge. Was impressed with Kenny Goins.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Michigan State with 17 assists on 20 field goals -- but the Spartans can't get consistent stops on the defensive end and when they do, they're stagnating offensively. Kansas has gone into a bit of a lull the last few minutes, but Michigan State hasn't been able to truly take advantage. The Jayhawks keeping Spartans at an arm's length.

Numbers to know after the first half: Dedric Lawson finished 2-for-10 but grabbed 11 rebounds. Udoka Azubuike matched the entire Michigan State roster with 10 points in the paint. Nick Ward, the most important player on the roster, started 0-for-5. Bad first half for Michigan State.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

No. 1 Kansas drops 50 in its first half of action this season, up 14 on Michigan State. Ten different Jayhawks scored in the first 20 minutes. Spartans look like they're figuring things out, especially in terms of finding a go-to-guy. Kansas looking like a deep, balanced well-oiled machine already.

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

When I talked to Udoka Azubuike over the summer, he told me that he learned a lot at his NBA workouts. Pro execs told him he could evolve into a Clint Capela-type if he expands his offense and proves he can consistently run the floor like other NBA bigs. He certainly looks the part tonight. His post game has definitely evolved since last season.

Lawson lobs it up, Azubuike throws it down (0:29)

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Udoka Azubuike might have been the prospect I've been most wrong about in the last five years or so. Thought he'd be a marginal contributor at best -- his improvement has been unbelievable. He's borderline unstoppable when he gets the ball down low.

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

Quentin Grimes already looks like a next-level guy for Kansas. He's developed an NBA body in his first six months on campus. He makes good decisions. And he's always competitive, which we saw when he was talking trash to Michigan State's bench after his 3-pointer in the corner. Definitely a player to watch.
