WASHINGTON -- Charles Williams scored eight points in overtime and Howard ended North Carolina Central's six-game streak with an 84-78 upset Saturday afternoon.
Williams' jumper gave Howard (4-17, 1-4 Mid-Eastern) the lead for good, 77-76, early in overtime and he followed that with a 3-pointer and another jumper in the final minute. It was the first conference win for Howard and first MEAC loss for NC Central.
Howard led 35-31 at halftime but NC Central surged early in the second half to take a 54-49 advantage with 12:24 to play. Cole scored 14 of Howard's next 18 points and the Bison led 67-66 with 3:21 remaining. They were up by two with :13 left when NC Central's Reginald Gardner Jr. sank a jumper as time expired to force overtime.
Jim Calhoun, who has a career record of 873-380 and led UConn to three national titles before retiring in 2012, has been hired as coach at Saint Joseph.
Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott believes a tentative ruling making show-cause orders illegal in California would threaten NCAA membership for state schools.
Guard James Bouknight, ranked 87th in the ESPN 100, is the first player from the Class of 2019 to commit to UConn and first-year coach Dan Hurley.
