McLaren closing in on title sponsor

Eric Boullier has confirmed McLaren is close to securing a new long-term title sponsor.

The team has been without a title sponsor since the partnership with Vodafone finished at the end of last season, meaning McLaren has featured Mobil 1, Esso, Gulf Air and SAP respectively as sidepod sponsors in the opening four races. Before the Australian Grand Prix, Ron Dennis revealed the team was confident of confirming a deal at some point during the opening rounds of the season, putting the delay down to not wanting to sell space on the car for a knock-down rate following a downturn in results last season.

Despite the continued delay, McLaren's racing director Boullier said Dennis' plan is still going ahead but did not add when a deal is likely to be announced.

"The plan Ron discussed is still happening," Boullier said when asked about the deal by ESPNF1 at a McLaren-Mercedes phone-in. "Until we have signed the package, signed the final contract, obviously nothing will be announced or changed. As long as we are in this position we will keep going with what we are doing now."

When asked whether the situation of having no title sponsor for so long will have an effect on the team's budget this season, Boullier simply replied: "Not at all."
