Cancan came into the fight as the overwhelming favourite, being the No. 1 seed and with a 2-1 winning record over Adams, but the Chinese could not contain the Brit who claimed a 16-7 win.

Adams was impressive from the off, landing crisp shots and dominating with her speed.

With the partisan crowd in the ExCel roaring her on, Adams carried the momentum in the second and a couple of huge shots put her opponent on the floor - which took her into a 9-4 lead after two rounds.

Cancan made a big effort in the third and did rock Adams, but once again it was the Brit's workrate that impressed the judges.

With a huge lead to protect, Adams could have been forgiven for keeping her distance but she continued to come forward, wowing the crowd with her footwork, and it propelled her to a stunning win and a place in history as the first woman to win gold in Olympic boxing.

"It's like a dream come true for me," Adams said. "I've just wanted this all my life. To think I've finally done it with all this support.

"I'd like to thank all the supporters here and all the support back home - I'm bringing that gold medal back to Leeds!"

Katie Taylor lived up to her billing as the star name in women's boxing by taking the lightweight title to hand Ireland their first gold medal of London 2012.

Taylor had huge expectation on her shoulders, given her standing in the sport, but she had to dig deep as she trailed her Russian rival Sofya Ochigava.

However, a huge third round tipped the balance in Taylor's favour and the Bray native powered through the fourth to claim a 10-8 victory.
