UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee is braced for a "heap" of athletes to contest their omission from the Team GB Olympic squad, which will be announced on Tuesday.

Jenny Meadows, a World Championships bronze medallist in the 800 metres, has already said she will launch an appeal if not selected - and plenty of others could follow suit.

"I expect a heap of appeals because people are desperate," Van Commenee said. "The fact that one [Meadows] has said 'I will appeal' without knowing the reasoning of the panel … I find that very peculiar.

"It's the culture, almost, these days - a phenomenon in society not only among athletes. People find it more difficult to accept a situation and therefore go to court or stick their middle finger up or start protesting."

Those omitted from the Team GB party will face sanctions if they take to Twitter expressing their disappointment, because all have been forced to sign up to an official gagging order.
