Phillips Idowu's hopes of winning Olympic gold at London 2012 have been boosted by the news that Teddy Tamgho will miss the Games with an ankle injury.

The triple jump indoor world record holder had surgery on his right ankle last week for a bone outgrowth.

Tamgho missed last year's World Athletics Championships in Daegu because of a fractured ankle, a problem which is he is struggling to shake off.

The Frenchman claims he is already walking after leaving hospital on June 6 and intends to return to training in mid July. Tamgho, who turns 23 on Friday, claimed he could have pushed himself to be ready for London, but did not want to jeopardise his career.

With Idowu's rival Nelson Evora already ruled out with a fractured shinbone, the battle for medals looks set to be between Idowu and American pair Christian Taylor and Will Claye.
