Silviniaco Conti earned trainer Paul Nicholls his eighth win at the King George VI Chase at Kempton as he outlasted favourite Cue Card down the final stretch.

Cue Card had led for a majority of the race and looked set to march to victory when jockey Joe Tizzard guided him over the final jump cleanly.

But Silviniaco Conti, winner of the recent Betfair Chase and ridden by Noel Fehily, shifted up a gear to win by three-and-a-half lengths and become just the fourth winner of the King George VI Chase since 2004.

"I was slow over three out and I thought Joe had got away from me, but this horse is as tough as nails and he's a very good horse," Fehily said.

"This is a different track [to Haydock] and I knew my horse would be fitter today.

"Paul [Nicholls] has done a great job - he told me all week he'd improved from Haydock and he has. It was brilliant. I've not ridden a Gold Cup winner, but I hope he's a Gold Cup horse. This is unbelievable."

Al Ferof, also trained by Nicholls, finished third.
