Sam Waley-Cohen is relishing the prospect of getting the leg up on "a big, strong" Long Run, ahead of the seven-year-old's seasonal debut in the Betfair Chase this month.

Long Run looked to have the chasing world at his feet when powering to Gold Cup glory in 2011. However, he failed to show the same form last term and was unable to defend his crown at the Cheltenham Festival.

With Kauto Star now retired, Long Run is the star, established name in the chasing ranks and Waley-Cohen is hopeful his mount will find his best form - starting at Haydock on November 24.

"We are pleased with Long Run," Waley-Cohen said. "He has developed into a big, strong racehorse which we are all very excited about. He seems to have had a good summer and looks great.

"I think you would have to say he didn't achieve the heights last season that he achieved the year before. You always set your aspirations by what you have done in the past, but in many ways you can't be disappointed about being beaten by arguably the greatest horse of all time.

"I thought his jumping was significantly better than the year before and he was much more mature.

"I can't wait to race ride him again - riding him in work is a pleasure and riding him in races is a real joy for me."

A total of 19 horses have been handed entries in the Betfair Chase, with Dynaste, Grands Crus, Silviniaco Conti, Albertas Run and Cue Card among those put in the race.

Paul Nicholls' Cristal Bonus, Al Ferof, and Tidal Bay could join stablemate Silviniaco Conti in the race - while Long Run's trainer Nicky Henderson also has Bobs Worth and Burton Port engaged.

The 2010 Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander could reappear in the contest, while Wayward Prince, Weird Al, Midnight Chase, Calgary Bay, Cappa Bleu, Cannington Brook and The Giant Bolster complete the entries
