Aidan O'Brien's winning run failed to continue on Sunday as Imperial Monarch was beaten to the Prix du Jockey Club by Saonois.

O'Brien had combined with son Joseph to become the first father-and-son winners of the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday. That victory came on the back of a triumph in the Coronation Cup.

However, Imperial Monarch simply left himself too much to do as he found himself at the back of the field when turning for home. He picked up well in the home straight but it was too little, too late.

Saonois, trained by J-P Gauvin and piloted by Antoine Hamelin, emerged victorious from what proved to be a rough race. As the field became bunched towards the line Saint Baudolino claimed second with Gregorian well out of the places.

The British challengers, Ektihaam and Most Improved, were among those sucked into the traffic.
