Nico Rosberg is sure he would have won the British Grand Prix had he not had a gearbox problem on lap 29.

Rosberg was leading when his car found neutral coming out of The Loop for the 29th time and failed to recover full drive from that point onwards. Hamilton had opted for an alternative strategy before Rosberg's issue and appeared to be quicker, but Rosberg is in little doubt that he would have come out on top.

"I'm very confident that I would have won the race," he said. "It was just a reliability problem and a pity, definitely. Now we need to review it, try to push on and keep on working on any small reliability issues we are having, as we have done and as we are still doing. That's it.

"Things were going well until that point. I accept it as a reliability thing and go for the next one at Hockenheim."

After the race Rosberg said it was difficult to console himself, but is confident he will bounce back in time for his home grand prix in Germany in two weeks.

"It's difficult to find so many good feelings today, but as of tomorrow I will try to look for them again. There's the factor that I'm in the lead of the championship going into my home race, so that's good."

Rosberg said once the gearbox problem hit he gave up on trying to battle Hamilton.

"There was one thing before the start or just after, which was weird. It started on lap 20 and got worse and worse and resulted in some neutral occasions where I got neutral and had to pull the clutch and go again. Then it just got worse and worse from there. My mentality changed from 'let's stop racing Lewis and get this to the end somehow'. I had such a pace advantage that I could do some pretty radical things to keep the gearbox alive, but because since it was mechanical there was nothing that could have been done."
