I'll never fear Tiger again - McIlroy

Rory McIlroy says he will never fear Tiger Woods again, as he comes to terms with life as a major champion.

McIlroy has not played a competitive round since winning the US Open at Congressional just over two weeks ago, but will return to the spotlight next week as he looks for a second major title at the Open Championship in Kent.

One player who might not be in attendance at Royal St George's is Tiger Woods, who is still recovering from a series of injury problems.

But even if the 14-time major champion does recover in time to compete, McIlroy no longer believes he will feel any inferiority to the American.

"I respect everything that Tiger has done, but I am a competitor of his now," McIlroy said. "I can't be in awe of what he does."

The Northern Irishman has embarked on a series of media obligations since winning his maiden major, and admitted that all the attention has come as something of a surprise. But he believes he is equipped to cope with the increased expectation from fans around the world.

"As a golfer you grow up and all you try to do is imagine winning tournaments, and becoming the best golfer you can be," he added. "But you don't realise everything that comes along with that - the fame, the attention - and it is something that I will just have to deal with."
