Denmark's Morten Madsen held his nerve in the closing stages of the South African Open to wrap up his maiden title on the European Tour, holding off home favourite and playing partner Charl Schwartzel in the final round at Glendower Golf Club in Ekurhuleni.

The 25-year-old put together a bogey-free closing round of 67, with three birdies in four holes from the 13th pushing him clear of the field. Schwartzel put together six birdies in his round but a triple-bogey at the par-3 6th and a double-bogey at the 10th put paid to his challenge.

Another South African, Henne Otto, looked as though he would be walking off with the trophy until back-to-back sixes on the 15th and 16th squandered his advantage, and Madsen had the simple task of knocking in from three feet on the 18th to clinch his two-shot victory.

"It sounds like a cliche, but I really didn't expect to be here now at the beginning of the week," said Madsen at the trophy presentation. His previous best finish was a tie for second at the Madeira Open last May.
