Rickie Fowler birdied six of his last eight holes to card an eight-under 63 and take the lead at the first round of the Australian PGA.

Adam Scott, competing in his first tournament on home soil since becoming Australia's first Masters champion, is two shots back on Fowler after shooting 65 in the gusty afternoon winds at Royal Pines.

Scott is tied with compatriots Matthew Ballard and David McKenzie.

Fowler, starting on the 10th, began with five pars and then hit two birdies before the turn.

"It was a good, solid start," Fowler said. "A little bit slow on my front nine, but I just stayed patient and finally got a few things to go, made a couple of good up and downs."

Nathan Green sits in fifth after a 66, with fellow Australian Jason Norris and South Korea's Kwon Sung-yeol a shot back.
