Ken Brown has become the latest BBC pundit to land himself in hot water after a comment he made during the Open Championship was perceived as racist.

As Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods lined up to play the 12th hole during the third round at Muirfield, Brown, who represented Europe on five occasions during the 1970s and 1980s, said: "This fairway runs like an Ethiopian chickenā€¦ it just runs."

Many took to Twitter to voice their disgust, including former world snooker champion Shaun Murphy, who wrote: "Did Ken Brown just say that? This fairway runs like an Ethiopian chicken?"

He later added: "Funny way to announce his retirement I thought."

A BBC spokesman said: "Ken apologises for his comments and any offence that was caused."

Brown's unfortunate comment comes just weeks after tennis analyst John Inverdale asked during the women's singles final if Marion Bartoli knew she would have to work harder than others as she was "never going to be a looker."
