France head coach Philippe Saint-Andre has attempted to deflect criticism away from his players by insisting he should be made the scapegoat for their poor performances.

Saint-Andre's side have come under fire for a series of disappointing displays in the current Six Nations campaign. They were unconvincing in a narrow 19-17 win over Scotland last weekend and were comfortably thrashed 27-6 by Wales two weeks earlier.

However, Saint-Andre is prepared to shoulder the blame. He said: "There is frustration over the last match. You have to want the ball and to advance.

"What happens on the outside is not important. If I have to be the scapegoat, then no problem. But let the players do their work."

Despite their poor performances, France are still in with a chance of taking the Six Nations crown. They face Ireland on Saturday with both sides engaged in a three-way shoot-out with England for the title. Ireland however, are in the driving seat with a superior points difference.

Saint-Andre defended his team's record in the tournament. He said: "When you realise how many important players are out injured, there are six, seven, eight, and yet we still see this group improving, picking themselves up and still being in a position to win the Six Nations.

"We're still dreaming about winning, about scoring 15 tries and that everyone's in a dream.

"But seriously, we're doing a lot better than last year at this point. Then we had three defeats and a draw, now we have three wins."
