Toulon switch edges closer for Halfpenny

Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny has reportedly signed for Toulon ahead of next season.

Reports in La Provence claim Mourad Boudjellal, Toulon owner, and Halfpenny have held talks in London and the fullback has agreed to swap the Cardiff Blues for the Top 14.

The news comes after months of speculation regarding the future of the British & Irish Lions star with Clermont Auvergne also previously interested in him. But it seems Halfpenny, having visited Toulon earlier in the season, has opted for the Heineken Cup champions where he will share kicking duties with Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau and Rory Kockott, who also appears to be on his way to Toulon.

The news will come as a huge blow for the Blues as Halfpenny looks set to be another Welsh star to opt for a move abroad instead of re-signing for one of the Welsh regions. If the move becomes a reality, Halfpenny will join Ospreys' Ian Evans at Toulon next term while Mike Phillips, Jamie Roberts, Dan Lydiate and James Hook are already playing in the Top 14.

Fellow Lion Sam Warburton's future is still unclear with Northampton Saints reportedly leading the running for his signature while Adam Jones, Alun-Wyn Jones and Rhys Priestland are also out of contract at the end of the season.
