Van Gaal: We have to know it is only one game

Louis van Gaal has been backed after Manchester United lost their Premier League opener to Swansea - by David Moyes.

United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford as Van Gaal took charge of his first Premier League game, following six wins out of six pre-season matches.

Moyes, who was sacked just 10 months into a six-year contract after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at United last summer, has called for the club to give his permanent replacement Van Gaal the patience he was not afforded.

"Everybody knew it was going to take time," said Moyes, in his role as a pundit for beIN Sports. "Taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson for anybody, it would take time.

"Louis van Gaal will need the time to do the job as well. He'll need to have that opportunity to change things and get a team he wants."

Moyes' United were 4-1 winners at Swansea in their first Premier League game last season, but the club went on to lose six matches at home and 11 overall before his reign was cut short in April.

While Van Gaal has reiterated his desire to bring in defensive recruits before the transfer window closes, Moyes believes United's recent suffering is more down to the competitive nature of the Premier League and not a lack of quality in the current squad.

"What happened today happened to me against West Brom, Newcastle, and Everton last year," Moyes added.

"Every team in the Premier League is very organised now and quite often it's the special players that win you the games."
