ESPN FC: How much will Manchester United miss Luke Shaw?

Manchester United target Mehdi Benatia has ruled out a move away from Roma.

Benatia attracted Louis van Gaal's attention after excelling at the heart of Roma's defence last season and is widely regarded as the best centre-back in Serie A.

Hull eye Welbeck

  • Hull City are preparing a £14 million move for Manchester United and England forward Danny Welbeck, according to the Daily Mirror.
  • Welbeck has reportedly been told by Louis van Gaal that his chances of first team action will be limited, and Hull manager Steve Bruce sees the 23-year-old as a replacement for Shane Long, who looks set to quit for Southampton just months after joining from West Bromwich Albion.
  • Welbeck, who started England's World Cup games against Italy and Uruguay, will be keen to keep himself in manager Roy Hodgson's plans for the Euro 2016 campaign, which gets underway in Switzerland on September 8.

The 27-year-old is reportedly unhappy with Roma bosses for reneging on a promise to improve his terms this summer and it was thought he is keen to seek a transfer.

But that has not been the case officially and on Wednesday the Morocco international told fans at Roma's summer training camp in Austria to "relax" because he is "staying put".

Sources have told ESPN FC that Van Gaal is keen to draft in Benatia as one of two new central defenders to fill the voids left by the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic this summer.

With Luke Shaw ruled out for a month due to injury, United are now even shorter on defensive options and a move for Benatia - valued at around £33 million by Roma - could be imminent, even in time for the start of the Premier League season against Swansea on Saturday.

United could face competition from Chelsea, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that Chelsea have requested to open negotiations with the player, even though manager Jose Mourinho told reporters: "We're not interested. We have [Gary] Cahill, [Branislav] Ivanovic and [Kurt] Zouma."
