Spanish champions Atletico Madrid have ended Tottenham's hopes of landing Antoine Griezmann by meeting the player's £24 million release clause.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had identified the Frenchman, who scored 16 goals for Real Sociedad last season, as a key target as he continues to reshape his squad in time for the new season.

Vertonghen: I'm staying

However, the inability to offer Champions League football means Spurs have missed out on signing Griezmann, also said to have been a target for Chelsea and Monaco this summer.

Atletico, who are preparing for life without Diego Costa after he joined Jose Mourinho revolution in south west London, confirmed the deal in an official club statement.

It read: "Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad have reached an agreement for the transfer of Antoine Griezmann.

"The young French footballer will sign a contract with our teams once he passes his medical."

Tottenham have already signed Ben Davies and Michel Vorm this summer for a combined fee of £15m in a deal which saw Gylfi Sigurdsson rejoin Swansea City.
