Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has revealed that Louis van Gaal suggested he could join him at Manchester United.

Robben has been linked with United since it was announced that van Gaal would be taking over at Old Trafford after the World Cup.

Robben said after the Netherlands' 3-0 win over Brazil he shares a "special bond'' with van Gaal, but that does not mean he will be following the new United boss to Manchester for the new season.

"He said I could always come to Manchester United," Robben told NOS. "I have a special bond with him. He is the most important coach in my career. It is not an option, though. I will stay at Bayern Munich."

Robben has been in top form under van Gaal's stewardship at the World Cup, scoring three goals in seven appearances.

Meanwhile, van Gaal is keen for his new United team to play with the same unity as his Netherlands side as he prepares for his debut campaign in charge of United
