Phil Neville expects to discover if he has a part to play in Louis van Gaal's coaching team at Manchester United in the next five days.

The former United full-back returned to Old Trafford last summer as first-team coach under his former Everton manager David Moyes.

Neville remained at the club after Moyes' sacking along with three other members of the Class of 92, with Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt - who is also unsure of his future at the club - helping out interim manager Ryan Giggs in the final four games of the season.

But new manager Van Gaal has brought in three Dutch coaches - Frans Hoek, Marcel Bout and Albert Stuivenberg and made Giggs assistant manager - while Neville and Butt have been kept in the dark about his future.

Neville thinks he may have to leave, telling the BBC: "Football moves on and sometimes you have to move on. My future will probably be resolved in the next five days.

"I am speaking with the chief executive [Ed Woodward]. There is no fall-out. If I am not involved [as a coach] I am sure I will be able to play a part in it in other ways."

Neville's former team-mate Butt was in charge of United's Under-19 team before working with the senior side during Giggs' temporary tenure.

In June, it was reported that Butt would continue to work alongside Warren Joyce with the Under-21 side and manage the Under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League.

However, Butt has yet to receive confirmation of his Old Trafford future. "There isn't a role I would turn down," he said. "The last 18 months have been about my development as a coach. The next step might be managing different aspects of the game.

"I am open to anything but my biggest thing is to have a purpose. Whether that is with 12-year-old kids or the first team is irrelevant."
